In Poland, there is a LARP (Live Action Role Playing) group @4thofJulyLarp that roleplays as contemporary Americans. They just come together and show off their most American-ish outfits and act out various scenarios that they imagine would happen in the USA. It’s brilliant. Icelandic cartoonist Hugleikur Dagsson is a master of dark humor and offensive jokes. As the artist states on his site, he has been “breathing air and making jokes” ever since he was born. Nicholas Gurewitch is the creator behind The Perry Bible Fellowship webcomic. It first appeared in the Syracuse University newspaper The Daily Orange in 2001. The comics are usually three or four panels long, and are generally characterized by the juxtaposition of whimsical childlike imagery or fantasy with morbid, sudden or unexpected surreal humor. Common subjects include ironical occurrences, religion, sex, war, science fiction, suicide, violence, and death. There is almost nothing Edu Monteiro wouldn’t put over his head for the sake of a self-portrait. He calls this collection “Sensorial Self-Portraits”. The somewhat disturbing series was started in 2009. He hides his face behind a mask made from found objects and materials, choosing them based on the sensory and aesthetic impact they make on the viewer. Bananas, feathers, coal, cigarettes, dead animals, and even an octopus have all guest-starred in Montiero’s photos, a refreshing change from the sheer amount of vapid selfies we see on social media each day.
